Big Ole Water Bottle

Joy is having a hard time drinking enough water throughout the day. In my attempts to help her, I’d like to buy her a water bottle that is or is close to the amount of water she should intake each day. Thus relieving her of even thinking if she has drunken enough yet or not. According to web calculators she should be drinking around 100 oz a day or 2.2 liters. I found this one on Amazon. I picked it b/c it doesn’t look too overwhelming, it has a lid, and is BPA free.

Any one out there have any recommendations for a large capacity water bottle?

XX Chromosomes

 jimk

Just to make it an official McBlog announcement, we’ll be having a baby GIRL around September 15th, 2011!

The baby looked completely healthy in the ultrasound. I always see this as nothing short of a miracle, and feel so grateful. The placenta is against the back wall of the uterus rather than the front (which is fine), so I can feel this baby’s every move!

Pace is alright with it being a girl, possibly because sweet Charlotte has him wrapped around her finger, so she’s basically softened him.

Chase is thrilled to have another sister on the way! I was surprised that he actually preferred this over having a baby brother. He remembers how much he loved holding baby Charlotte & he just loves to snuggle babies. (Unfortunately for Chase, Charlotte just screams at him & pushes him away whenever he tries to hug or kiss her. I feel bad for him!)

I am doing well. I’m happy to be having a girl; we would’ve been happy with a boy too, because Chase would have had a brother! But I absolutely loved having the whole “sweet baby girl” experience with Charlotte, and I will love having this one, too.

The “nursery” is actually ready to go, because I didn’t take down any of Charlotte’s bedding/décor! I’m glad that we weaned Charlotte off her binkies, transitioned her to a big bed, & potty trained her well before this little one’s arrival. (Major feats!) Hopefully this will help Charlotte feel like the big girl, and that she’s not being replaced as the baby girl of the family… BTW “girl” is one of those words that become really weird when you stare at it or say it too many times. Anyway.

In case anyone is wondering where the above outfit can be found, it’s on the Janie & Jack website. Absolutely the cutest baby & kid clothes ever! Never mind the prices.…

Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival

When my brother Gino was here, he taught Rachel & me a thing or two about how to use our cameras. I kind of understood, but I’d like to learn more… It seems so complicated! Now, I’m not trying to be some sort of all-star photographer by any means, but I AM interesting in knowing how to take decent photos. Especially because I have such cute kids to take pictures of!

IMG_1704

The photo below is just silly. I was trying to get a sweet, sentimental shot of the kids together, but to no avail. Chase just can’t resist large, grassy banks. He enjoyed somersaulting his way on down! And Charlotte was just… running wild. It was great!

IMG_1706

My parents took Chase, Charlotte, & me to the very first day of the annual Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point. It’s always nice to have my mom along to tell us what the names of the plants are! Unfortunately, the tulips were not yet in bloom or even close for that matter, but good times were had nevertheless. Especially because cotton candy was involved!

IMG_1718

Cotton candy is yummy to kids of course, but also to me because it reminds me of when we used to get it at the Sonoma County Fair (way back when I was a kid). For some reason, my parents didn’t want any! What??? My dentist father refused to eat pure sugar!?!

IMG_1712

Although there were little to no blooming tulips, at least the daffodils were showing their bright, shining faces. I really didn’t know how to photograph them. The next picture looks like it has some odd Photoshop effect on it, but I’ve never even set foot in Photoshop! I like the effect anyway.

IMG_1711

And then there were the beautiful man-made waterfalls! My parents kept marveling at how much $ the Thanksgiving Point Gardens must have cost to build, & to maintain now. The 55 beautiful acres are pretty impressive.

Charlotte enjoyed peering down at the waterfalls from way up above, but Chase would have no part in that. My dad said he didn’t blame him. Chase definitely inherited his grandparents’ fear of heights!

Charlotte is asking these tulips WHEN, exactly, they plan to emerge.  Smile

We were all tuckered out by the end of the outing. *Yawn.*

Calling All Recommendations!

1) Does anyone recommend a great baby car seat you’ve had?

We do not have a car seat for this baby. The one we used for Chase & Charlotte was from a yard sale (unsafe idea, I know), and fell apart by the time Charlotte was done with it. I think we just threw it out. I have no idea what to get for our baby. Are convertible car seats the way to go? I like the ones that sit a little higher because they seem comfortable and they can better see out the windows.

2) Has anyone had an outstandingly wonderful stroller, particularly one with a Rider attachment?

I would also like to get a stroller. I’m going to be picky about my stroller this time, and not just get one off Craigslist. We like easy steering & adjustable handlebar(s) so Pace & I can both feel comfortable pushing it along.  I don’t think I really need a double stroller because Charlotte will be turning 3 right after the baby is born (same age difference as Chase & Charlotte). But I’ve seen some amazing (aka expensive) strollers in magazines, like the Micralite with Rider. (I know, I know, Pace. Too pricey. But I like the idea of the stroller.) It seems just perfect for a slightly older child that doesn’t really need to sit in a stroller, but might need a break from constant walking. With the Rider feature, the child can just hop on the riding boards for a few minutes and easily get down.

OK, let’s hear it!!!

Friday thoughts

a businessman was at the pier of the small Tuvaluan island when a boat with a fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were fish. The businessman complimented the Tuvaluan on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied only a little while.

The businessman then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish? The Tuvaluan said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The businessman then asked, but what do you do with the rest of you time? The Tuvaluan fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a nap with my wife, Puna, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitars with my friends; I have a full and busy life.”

The businessman scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats; eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. You could sell directly to the processor and eventually open your own cannery. You would need to leave this small fishing island-nation and move to Australia, then LA and eventually New York City where you would run your expanding enterprise.”

The Tuvaluan fisherman asked, “But how long will this all take? To which the businessman replied, “15 to 20 years.” “But what then, sir? The businessman laughed and said, “Thats the best part! When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and make millions, flying around on your own corporate jet!” “Millions, sir? Then what?” The businessman said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing island where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a nap with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your friends.”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “Isn’t that what I’m doing right now?”

David Copperfield, Anyone???

I’ve felt inspired by my friend Jamie’s blog post about how she’s read lots of great books lately, many of which she’s listened to on MP3 while she does chores around the house or whatever. What a great idea! Doing something that you want to do (get some reading in), while you’re doing something mindless (yet necessary)!

I’m not a big reader, but I do enjoy a good book every once in a while, if I can stay focused on it. But often it’s a challenge for me to focus on a book!! On the other hand, my mom is probably the most well-read person in the world (you name it, she’s probably read it).  Unfortunately, I don’t think I got those genes, but I do like to think about things and have topics on my mind beyond the cares of the household. I’d like to “read” a book every once in a while, even if it’s just via MP3. I think that still counts!

Our tiny, outdated city library is severely limited… But when I was there last, I managed to grab a copy of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, on cd. Dickens is a great author, I thought, and I really LOVED reading Great Expectations in high school. The cd cover also said it was the most autobiographical of Dickens’ works, & his personal favorite. Score!

Well… I’m in chapter 7 and I’m thinking of moving on to another book… I love the detail and gorgeous descriptions characteristic of Dickens, but it is VERY sad & depressing. Eight-year-old David is sent away from a very abusive home to an even more abusive boarding school. I remember feeling this same way when I read the A Boy Called It series and Five People You Meet in Heaven. When it comes to severe punishments and child abuse, I’m aware that it exists all over the place, but it just saddens me almost to the point of despair. I can’t imagine living in complete and utter fear of one’s caretakers and what they might do next. I don’t want to be naïve or in denial of reality, but at the same time, I don’t want these things on my mind more than they need to be.

So, any comments or suggestions for some easy, uplifting reads (especially if they come in audio form) are welcomed here!

“Cake Decorating 101”

I recently finished a 4-week Wilton Cake Decorating class that I took (through the city) with my lovely friend Katie.

It was interesting to do everything from scratch! I can see why people just use box mixes… But the density and flavor of those just don’t compare to homemade cakes.

I loved learning some of the tricks of the trade and some basic decorating skills, even if it was a lot of work to come ready each week with cakes and icing ready to go!

My first cake was a yellow cake with chocolate buttercream icing, and vanilla pudding & strawberries as the filling. It was good enough to eat (although a bit dry).

The second week we did cupcakes, which was a lot of fun. We learned a couple types of flowers and also how to fill cupcakes (my favorite)! I always insisted on using real butter in my buttercream icing recipes because I just don’t like the blandness and yuckiness that is shortening. But the real buttercream melted a little and didn’t make the stiffest flowers. I also just used a German chocolate box mix to make the cupcakes, but I added coconut cream pudding to the mix, which made them super moist.

My last cake had a “fish” design. I didn’t care too much about making it perfect because I only had 20 minutes to decorate the cake. But I WAS able to get the base layer of icing (the white part) super smooth; it almost looked like fondant. The cake inside was dark chocolate cake with chocolate pudding as the filling. It was very moist and delicious!

It was a great course. I was so grateful to Pace for putting our kids to bed each Thursday when I was at my class!

An Almost Perfect Wife

Happy Valentines Day Joy

I love you!

My Dear Wife

Joy has a very calm side. She could lay on my shoulder for hours at a time. I really like how she falls asleep on me. Her soft side stays around most of the day, although Chase knows how to harden it pretty fast. While I’m usually the first to pull away after 5 minutes, I love when Joy hugs and kisses me. I couldn’t ask for a better example for Charlotte to become a wonderful woman. Keep up the good work honey and Happy Valentines Day, I love you.

My Great Wife!

Joy is so much fun! I really love how she plays with our kids and makes time for fun. She loves cleaning and doing laundry, but luckily she stops to jump in the pillow pit of doom and watch some Disney movies. I really need a wife with a good sense of humor, especially when I have some food that doesn’t agree with me. Joy always laughs at my jokes. I’m really glad she isn’t too serious about most things (don’t poke her arm pit, she will kill you). Happy Valentines Day Joy, I love you!
