“Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation… Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.”

We’re Super Outdoorsy.
…OK not really, but we DID go on a child-friendly hike a couple weeks ago! (Grotto Trail up the Payson Canyon.)
The last time we did this hike (last summer), we enjoyed the cute babbling brook that you repeatedly cross over on makeshift log bridges. This year, since there had been so much rain, some of the bridges were washed out and that babbling brook that trickled along was more of a crazy crashing creek (just trying to keep the words starting with the same letter, here).
(Note the rickety little half-log that Chase is standing on.) In hindsight, I realize that we were absolutely crazy to do this hike. I kind of felt that at the time, once when Charlotte almost fell in & once when Chase & his friend were sprinting along the trail next to the water. In the last couple weeks in this area of Utah, there have been lots of kids falling into rushing water and not surviving. It’s very sad. We did have a great 4:3 adult:kid ratio on our hike, though.
Pace was daring enough to take off his shoes and get into the freezing cold creek to take this picture! Weird that last summer, we were able to cross a bridge and get to the waterfall to play in it. Not this time!
Charlotte enjoyed the hike overall, but she freaked out when she got mud on her shoes & once again when she saw an ant on her foot. Chase & the neighbor kid we brought along had the best time just throwing rocks & other debris into the creek. And Chase’s bendy legs looked too weird in this photo to NOT include it in the post!
Treasure Hunt
Our city has a week long party to celebrate something. I’m not really sure, maybe it’s founding or maybe just to make money off the carnival and stuff. It doesn’t really matter why, it’s just a lot of fun. This year they posted a medallion hunt as part of the family fun. Each day starting on Monday they post a clue on the website around 9am. Figure out the clues, find the medallion and you “could win valuable prizes”. Given our family’s enjoyment of GeoCaching, I decided to check out the clues each day. Here they are, see if you can figure them out.
- 16
- No kindle
- Shhhhh
- Geraldo Rivera and Lionel Hutz
While you ponder on those clues, (I’ll explain them all later, so if you really do want to try and figure it out, don’t keep reading), I’ll kill the anticipation of these words and tell you what you already figured, WE FOUND THE 2011 SPRINGVILLE MEDALLION!!! Woo. It was SUCH a fun adventure. I’ll tell you all about it.
Ok so now on to the clues, this is the part where you’ve scrolled too far if you were trying to figure it out.
- 16 = 16th Pres. was Abraham Lincoln and lawyer by profession
- No kindle = It’s a book
- Shhhhh = At the city library
- Geraldo Rivera and Lionel Hutz = Lawyers
Got it? Go to the library and find the Lincoln lawyer book. Joy rushed to the library with the kids. After searching for a while she called me to tell me she hadn’t found it anywhere, when I heard Charlotte crying in the background I figured they were done looking. Then ten minutes later Joy called me back and whispered in a very giddy voice, “I found it!”. She then quickly went outside to the playground to tell me the rest.
She had asked the librarian if the book was in, to which the answer was, “They are all checked out”. So then Joy asked where they would be if they were there. She found the section and started looking in between the books, because we didn’t know what this thing even looked like. A disheartened Chase said, “Mom we never should have left the house! Lets go home!” Then she saw a copy of Lincoln Lawyer. GASP! What was it doing there? Chase quickly changed his attitude.
She took the book down and with Chase and Charlotte wondering, she opened the book. Inside had been carved out a diamond shape for the 2011 Medallion Hunt!
There was a note behind the medallion saying what secret action to take to participate in Plinko up on stage Saturday night. Understanding this is a small city deal, we are hoping to win at least a free meal at Wendy’s. That would probably be considered a valuable prize around these parts. The adventure of finding it was tons of fun.
Girl Names
Ok so the perfect girl name is Noel McCulloch. Who agrees with me? Yes our first daughter is technically Charlotte Noel McCulloch, but she doesn’t get in trouble very much so we NEVER call her Noel. So since it’s a name both Joy and I like, why not just name the next one Noel and never call Charlotte Noel with her middle name, or if it bothers her, lets officially take it away, I mean she’s gonna get married some day anyway and have to shed part of her name.
Am I crazy, or crazy smart? Discuss. (Your comment may be deleted if you dis-agree with me)
It’s been really rainy here lately! On the news the other night, they said this is the most rain for the month of May EVER on record for Utah. And apparently, the ski resorts will be open through the 4th of July! I haven’t minded the rain because we haven’t had to water our yard at all, and it’s so green & lush now.
These two little friends don’t mind the rain, either. Gotta love the non-boring outfits!
Charlotte adores her little friend that we watch once a week. Charlotte even uses this friend’s name in songs and as an adjective for things she likes.
Thomas Video Explosion!
Now, so you don’t ever have to go, I present A Day With Thomas in 191 secs.
Hello, Thomas!
Look how cute that little blue engine is!
We finally went to ride Thomas the Tank Engine up at Heber Valley Railroad last Friday. I say “finally” because I’ve been wanting to take Chase up there since he was tiny. Thomas only comes to our area annually, on Memorial Day Weekend. This year, we took the plunge & went! (Chase would have enjoyed this experience a lot more back when he was like 2 or 3, but what can ya do.)
GG came with us to see what it was all about. We did some mini-golf, played at the train tables, went through a tiny hay maze, & watched a magic show (Chase loved every second of that). Chase & Charlotte got balloon animal things, which both popped subsequently. So we stood in the line again (hey, we wanted our money’s worth out of this event!) & got new ones.
The actual train ride was slow & peaceful, except for the screaming coming from a tiny tot in our section. Charlotte even decided to relax & put her feet up for a minute.
We were all smiles & having a great time. Pace & I kept saying to our kids, “Isn’t this fun?!? It’s a ONCE IN A LIFETIME experience!” Meaning, we don’t intend to spend $18/person on such an experience again anytime soon (probably never again)! Let me tell you, the people who run this whole thing make BANK!
We got the obligatory photo with Sir Topham Hatt. Charlotte just glared at him. I didn’t blame her; he was an awkward, cartoony guy who acted very animated, despite his unchanging facial features. Charlotte definitely felt more at home with the bubble machine.
These tiny, yellow maintenance cars were a lot speedier than the Thomas train ride.
Side note: I was SO glad we packed our own whole wheat sandwiches, carrots & fruit, & water. I guarantee we felt a lot better after our lunch than everyone else did after eating their $5 hot dogs + Doritos! Not that I don’t love me some good junk food…
Charlotte still adores her little Thomas books that used to be her most prized possessions (before she discovered Disney princesses). Lately she’s been exclaiming, “We went to ride on Thomas like in the Thomas books!!!” So, all in all, mission accomplished. Cross that one off the Bucket List!
Penny Update
An update on little miss piggy bank. She has passed the penny! Charlotte had her shots scheduled for yesterday so after her shots Charlotte got her first x-ray ever. Joy told me she wasn’t scared at all but instead asked the x-ray tech if she liked her sandals. Two hours later Joy poked around Charlotte’s logs and found a hard metal item. We are SO glad this experience is over. And Charlotte is now a big advocate for not eating money. I also made the mistake one last time of calling her my little piggy bank, she quickly said “no daddy, I’m Charlotte!”
Can you find the penny in the pic on the left?
My lil Piggy Bank
Being the amazing husband I am, I was watching the kids while Joy went to some relief society thing. While having a great time putting the kids to bed I found a penny in Charlotte’s bed. So I put it on her night stand and said good night to them both. I went into our room across the hall. I enjoyed listening to them laugh with each other and then for me to say “sssshhh”. After a while they were being more quiet. Then all of a sudden Chase the vigil lookout and defender that he is started screaming “Charlotte is choking! Charlotte is choking!!” This freaked me out quite a bit as I jumped up. I found Charlotte gagging but luckily still breathing. So frantically I asked what she had eaten. She said in a very small princess voice “money”. I chuckled and took her to the bathroom to stick my finger down her throat and see if I could find anything in her mouth. It was too late. She swallowed the penny. They both got a very stern reminder about only food going in their mouths. I figured Joy would freak out when she came home, but she just laughed and said Gino used to eat money all the time. We are still waiting for confirmation that the penny has passed. Charlotte doesn’t like her new nickname of Piggy Bank.
