Oh What’s in a Name?

We did not have a hard time coming up with Chase’s name before he was born. We actually knew he would be “Chase” by the time I was 6 months along. However, we have found it difficult to name this little girl who will be born NEXT MONTH (weird)!

As for me, I like feminine names that are not too common, but that are still somewhat common– meaning they’re not in any top 10 lists but still in the top 100s. We do like the name Ava, but her name will not be Ava because it’s in a lot of states’ top 5 lists, and I don’t want there to be 4 Avas in our daughter’s kindergarten class along with her.

We may come up with the perfect name soon enough, but it’s likely that we just won’t tell anyone until she’s born because then it will be DONE and FINAL. That way, hopefully people will be LESS likely to give their negative opinions about the name (there will always be someone who dislikes the name chosen)! Although we really don’t know yet what we will name her, I just like browsing the Social Security website and all the different name lists they have from the last several years.

Here’s one of the lists, if you’re interested (notice how often “Ava” shows up on there– surprising! also notice how many more traditional boy names there are still around, versus the girl names).

Ahh Friday, .74 cent songs & DTV

A couple of tech things this Friday morning, I’m a lil tired from Chase waking up at 3, 4, and 5 am so I found the video below to be chuckle worthy. Also I just found .74 mp3 songs for sale at Walmart.com… why am I buying crap on iTunes!? Amazon also is selling straight .mp3 files but they are using variable bit rate to encode them, which I hate. Walmart doesn’t mention if they use variable but they do say all songs are 192 or 256 kbps. So why buy from Walmart instead of iTunes you say? Here’s my handy list:

  • Cheaper
  • Higher quality encoding
  • Already in .mp3 format
  • No lame DRM like transfer protection

So will we stop using iTunes, no prob not, I like it as a player and organizer and burner, plus Chase could watch the Walle trailer about 30 times a day. But for buying songs I’ll grab them off Walmart from now on and just add them to my library.
Where do you buy your .mp3s?

Toothpaste on the Mirror

We have a friend whose brother-in-law (his sister’s husband) recently passed away. This young man was only in his mid-twenties. I feel very sad for his young wife who is left behind! Even though I don’t like to think about it, I DO tend to think that there’s always a possibility that something like this could happen to me, or anyone! I try (key word: TRY) to treat my husband well, partly because I don’t want to look back with big regrets.

A couple months ago I read an excellent story entitled Toothpaste on the Mirror. It illustrates the need to focus on the good in our spouses rather than dwelling on their faults:

“Small things have a way of growing large when we dwell on them.

I learned some very good lessons from Mom and Dad, but the best one I ever learned was about six months after Dad died.

Toward the end of my parents’ lives, there were times they really didn’t get along very well. Dad was not active in the Church, and Mom was impatient with him. They seemed to wear on each other’s nerves some of the time. The arguments weren’t really serious, but I always felt pressured to take sides, a position I didn’t like.

Small offenses have a way of growing large when we dwell on them. One of Mom’s common complaints was that Dad splashed toothpaste on the mirror when he brushed his teeth and would never clean it off. It drove her crazy, and she couldn’t let it go. I tried to explain that in the grand scheme of life, toothpaste on the mirror wasn’t a very big thing. She wasn’t mollified. I wished they could get along better, that they could overlook small things and not be so critical of each other and be more forgiving, but that didn’t happen very often.

Dad died in the spring of 1991. It was a time of grief, especially for Mom. She realized after he was gone that she missed him more than she had anticipated. It was lonesome living alone in that big house; her partner of 62 years was gone. She started talking about him more frequently.

As the days turned to weeks and then to months, I visited Mom daily. During one visit her eyes turned watery as she told me of a mistake that she regretted. She reminded me of the toothpaste and how adamant she had been that he was slothful in neglecting to clean up his mess. She had been so angry over such a small thing.

Mom admitted that on the first cleaning day after Dad died, there was toothpaste on the mirror. She cleaned the mirror, but on the second cleaning day, there was more toothpaste on the mirror. The same thing happened on the third and fourth cleaning days as well.

Mom realized that she had blamed Dad for the toothpaste on the mirror for many years, but it had been both of them splashing toothpaste. She felt terrible that for years she had been so upset about such a small thing. She freely admitted that her anger had hurt her much worse than it had affected Dad.

I learned from this experience the need for forgiveness and tolerance in our relationships, and I honestly try to be more forgiving in my own. It seems such a waste of time to fret about small offenses. There are more important things to worry about than toothpaste on the mirror.”

Let’s treat those we love (especially our spouses) with more tolerance, respect, and selflessness.

Here We Go….

We woke up this morning to the first "real" snow of the season, and I must say I was not the LEAST bit excited. I have loved and cherished every beautiful, sunny Autumn day we’ve had! Some people love the snow, and the sight of it brings happy thoughts of holidays, staying indoors, or playing outside. But I just think of dark, COLD, long days; shoveling the driveway; eating too much junk food; and not wanting to go anywhere since car accidents seem to happen right and left. I guess I really need an attitude adjustment…

But Chase was excited enough for the both of us! I bundled him up in all his gear so he could go tromp around. He bumped his face and got a fat lip earlier this morning and refused to ice it, so I didn’t care that he kept eating the snow out there. Thank goodness we have an enclosed backyard– he couldn’t convince me to join him, even with all his innocence and charm!

I think this may very well be how it will go all winter: I bundle him up (making him go pee in the toilet FIRST), he plays in the backyard and repeatedly asks me to join him, he gets too cold after a few minutes and comes back in, we take off all his snow clothes, then 10 minutes later he wants to go back out there. AH wintertime.

The Devil Wears Haagen-Dazs!

Unfortunately, Rachel introduced me to the best ice cream ever and it is a-mazing. It goes by the name of Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream. I consider my being introduced to this ice cream to be “unfortunate” because I have only had ice cream like 3 times during my whole pregnancy and I wasn’t even missing it… Until now… It’s also quite unfortunate that this particular ice cream has 28 grams of fat per 1/2 cup, 11 grams of which are saturated. Yes, you read that correctly (mind you, a typical chocolate ice cream has a total of about 8 grams of fat per 1/2 cup). Basically I imagine that I am putting some sort of poison into my body when I eat this stuff. Despite all this, it is definitely the tastiest ice cream. Yeah thanks a LOT, Rach.  😉  But if I ever find out that my days to live are few, I will go buy a whole bunch of this Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream and eat it all day long! Just so you know.
