Ladies’ Night Out

On Saturday night during Conference weekend, Deseret Book apparently has a Ladies’ Night Out with which involves discounts, drawings, refreshments, etc. I had never been, so I told Rachel and Nada about it and we decided to go check it out (Rachel’s roommate Betze came too). The flyer had said that the first 100 women in line at 6pm would get a free clock, and it looked cute. We got there at about 5:35 pm and the prospects looked pretty good (maybe because it was rainy).

We got in line and counted approximately 70 women in front of us. Yesss! We were definitely going to get the free clocks! However, we noticed that the line in front of us was slowly growing. People were saying HI to friends and CUTTING in line! Hello, this was at an LDS Bookstore, during Conference Weekend, no less. Had they been getting anything out of Conference at all?!?! πŸ™‚ The two elderly women behind us were getting rather perturbed concerning the matter. By the time we got to the door, we were about #94-97 I think. So the old ladies behind us didn’t end up killing anyone. πŸ˜‰ And we got our free clocks! It’s amazing what people will do to get something that’s free!

It was very crowded in the store, and the "refreshments" turned out to be one plate containing about 20 cookies, so that was a bit wimpy. But we all ended up winning a random book or CD, and bought a few things on sale. I bought a book for Chase, called My Favorite Stories from the Book of Mormon. It’s a lift-the-flap board book that has pictures and short poems about some of the stories from the BofM.  We weren’t sure whether all the effort had been worth it, but it did turn out to be an exciting evening– better than staying at home! Thanks to Rachel and Nada for their willingness to help entertain Chase while we were there! Here are a couple photos of Chase in the shopping cart (while we waited in line– he didn’t stay in there for long)!

Foosball Tourni

My work is holding a foosball tournament to determine where the new foosball table will be put. Our floor entered five teams, b/c we really wanted it. After the first round yesterday, none of us were left. πŸ™ Now our only hope is the floor below us wins and we will take their old one. But I got a sweet jersey!

Our Cabin Getaway

You didn’t know we had a cabin, did you? Actually, the cabin belongs to some friends in our ward, but we were lucky to “get away” and spend the night there with some other couples last weekend! Scott and Danette own a cabin in Mount Pleasant, which is an hour south of here, in the middle of gorgeous nowhere. THANKS to Darin, Nada, and McGrandaddy and then later Rachel, we were able to leave Chase at home so we could have some time to eat and play games and laugh all night with some friends from the ward. The green surroundings were amazing, and the whole experience was so relaxing. Well, AFTER we finally found the place it was relaxing… It took us about 2 hours to get there, because the directions were a little outdated. But it was worth it to stay at this cozy place and to just hang out together! We even got to have a room to ourselves. It was nice to sleep in the next morning (even though it was only ’til about 8:30 a.m. that we could manage to do so) and not even worry about Chase. As it turns out, he didn’t seem to care too much that we were gone! Upon our arrival home, he just sat there drinking his juice and looking around, as if he were saying “ho hum, oh yeah I remember you guys.” Oh well! Anyway, hopefully I can get some photos up here so you can see some highlights of the little trip.

Fancy Breakfast Date

We have tons to write about, but so little time lately. One thing I wanted to write about was our fun little breakfast date at Pace’s work (Novell) a week ago. Chase and I met up with Pace at 9 am and went to the dining building (I don’t want to label it a cafeteria because that sounds like it would be gross). The special of the morning was crunchy french toast with creme brulee, strawberries, and whipped cream. The french toast was crunchy because it was dipped in corn flakes– clever idea, huh? It was pretty tasty, although the creme brulee sauce wasn’t as noticeable as I had anticipated.

Chase enjoyed the occasion as well! We went to the juke box in the corner, where “The Candy Man” was playing (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Chase danced in such a whimsical fashion that several bystanders stopped to watch the “show.” It was pretty funny. We got to wander through the beautiful Novell campus with its green lawns and the flowing stream. Chase would have preferred to swim in the stream, but that wasn’t my preference for him. A good time was had by all! Thanks for inviting us out to breakfast, Pace!

Tonight is lights out night!

(KSL News) Tonight is “Lights Out Utah,” a one-hour blackout period when you’re asked to turn off the non-essential lights in your home.

Governor Huntsman and Utah Clean Energy are urging Utahns to participate from 9 to 10 p.m.

It’s an experiment to see how much energy can be saved by simple measures. Rocky Mountain Power says if 750,000 customers turned off five light bulbs for one hour, it would save enough energy to run every appliance in 1,300 homes for a week.

Huntsman says the state needs to conserve resources as it grows. Most of Utah’s energy comes from coal. Homes and businesses are being asked to participate.

The same experiment was carried out in London in June. Apparently it was not conclusive at all, so now we are doing it….

We’re dining in style now!

We are so excited about our new dining set! (See photos below, click on them to enlarge.) You see, I’ve been okay with our old table for a long time (I bought it at D.I. for $35 when we got married and Pace painted the legs black for me so it’s sentimental). But that one has been quite wobbly ever since we moved here nearly a year ago (CRAZY). It broke during our move to this house, and we have been just dealing with it ever since.

But now… this set is amazing! It is so sturdy and gorgeous. It is cherry wood with a capuccino –aka dark brown– stain. It has six chairs but only four have arrived– and it was a pain to actually get those from the guy! (Long story, but basically I don’t recommend buying furniture from this store although the owner was indeed a kindly man.) The table has butterfly leaves, so the leaves fold out from their storage in the center. It seats about 8-10 people when the butterfly leaves are out. We love it– it’s been very convenient! TMom and Rachel picked it out for us, based on some hints I had previously dropped. Thank you to the TParents who purchased it for us, basically because I was jealous of all the new furniture in the nearby townhouse that Rachel is now inhabiting. Yes, we may be labeled as spoiled. But at least we are also grateful, huh? πŸ˜‰

I also went to our new local Rodworks store (which has home decor that I LOVE– Becky introduced me to it) and I bought these frames to complement the new table. Pace helped me crop the photos and make them sepia tone. I am very happy with the effect! I don’t really like to spend money on things, but I felt somewhat justified in buying these frames because the picture that was in this spot before was a small $7 Ansel Adams photo from Walmart. πŸ™‚ Anyway, what do you think?

Toy ideas

Prob the coolest toy combo yet. Transformers and Star Wars… Can’t wait to see what Ewoks transform into. I also wonder if all good toy ideas came from the 80s since no new toys/cartoons have spawned such a love and fan base. What kind of toy mashup would you like to see?

Also, I’ll be posting some new videos and pictures from Ryan’s wedding, the one of Chase singing is my new favorite.
