Google Chrome (a new browser)

Google annouced it’s Firefox killer yesterday, and released it today. A web browesr that acts like an OS. Each webpage’s pieces are loaded seperately, making each one load very fast. Only availbe for beta testing on the PC right now, Jason McGowan tells me “it’s FAST” and google apps runs as fast as a desktop app. I would fully bet on Google making a big impression on the browser world. Check out more info or download it now

Lookout Vonage and Skype

When people like something, the big boys will follow. Just saw an ad for T-Mobile $10 a month service at your home. While nearing my $5 a month skype bill, this hookup has some advantages. Here’s the readers digest version: Pay 50 bucks to get the Tmobile router made by Linksys. Plug-in your normal phone into one of the two phone jacks coming off the router. Now pay t-mobile 10 bucks a month and call nationwide with unlimited minutes, and caller id, call waiting, etc. (same features as Vonage and Skype). Talk and talk and talk. Oh but don’t forget the highspeed internet provided by someone else.

Good news with this setup is you can keep your hardware so if you plunked down $ for a good phone you don’t have to buy a special skype phone. Anyway, for those of you who keep running out of minutes on your lame cell phone plans might want to look into a backup phone, this is a pretty grandparent friendly system. I can’t imagine it being long before Verizon, and AT&T follow suite.

Have you seen VOIP deals in your area? Do you use it? Which one & why?

Solution to my problems

a group of scientists at the Delft University of Technology is aiming to harness the wind in a different way: by using kites to generate electricity. A recent test generated 10 kilowatts, or enough juice to power 10 homes, and the plan is to eventually send an array of kites called the Laddermill up to 30,000 feet in order to generate nearly 10 megawatts of power.

Wind power, great, great, great idea. I love it. Just put one of these in each neighborhood.

Mac OS X

Some cool stuff for you MAc users out there. I was having some problem using my spaces function with Adobe apps open, lots of little weird errors. So I turned spaces off and then needed to conserve screen space. Found these great menu bar items to help out.

iTunes in Menu Bar via youcontrol – www.yousoftware.com/tunes/. Cool little guy that will put controls in your menu bar, can change the playlist and other stuff, also you get a cool notification of what song is playing.

The Official Gmail Notifier For Mac – Handier access to your gmail and gcal account, shows upcoming events and email preview.

I also put iChat into the menu bar and I like how you can put your buddy list in there so you don’t have to have it open all the time.

Good work Mac, if I had a huge wad of money fall from the sky I would buy one of you, but alas, I’ll just keep using you at work and keep loving my Vista boxes at home.

What about you Apple users? Got any cool ways to save screen space/cool and useful menu items?

It was mine first

Don’t you wish you could instantly call dibs on an idea you had, and collect royalties? The headline: “Toyota to add solar panels to Prius hybrid” immediately grabbed my attention seeing how I was planning to make millions with this idea… but those small thinkers are planning on it only “powering the AC”… psshhhh if only they had my brain.

What ideas have you missed out on?

The begining of the end

of the internet. Yes today some idiots somewhere in the world somehow got to decide that the internet TDLs should not be strictly regulated but more open. So pretty much for 100,000 you can get anything you want… so Apple.com could make their new address apple.mac or apple.windows. Can you say mass confusion! What a lame idea, unless someone gives me a bunch of money so I can buy .go or .buy then I’ll make millions selling domain names… anyway here’s the summary full article on the link.

Top-level domain names, or TLDs, refer to Internet name suffixes, such as the ubiquitous .com, .net and .org, among others. Currently, there are more than 200 TLDs, which also include the two-character country codes used by websites, such as Britain’s .uk.

“This is a historic resolution,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of Icann’s board. “It’s going to make a big difference to how the Internet looks and works.”

Icann officials said some technical issues for the new system must still be worked out, but it could be reviewing the first applications for new TLDs as early as next spring. The application fee is expected to cost more than $100,000.

Under the new system, individuals, companies or groups could apply to have any string of letters established as a domain name. It could be a vanity name, for example — .smith — or a category name like .sports or .perfume. A company could also change its domain to reflect its brand, so Apple.com could become Apple.mac, for instance.

Straightforward applications will be approved quickly, officials said. A review process would be undertaken for controversial strings, such as those that infringe on existing trademarks, or appear to be too similar to existing TLDs, or raise moral objections.
Icann adopted the new rules after a meeting in Paris.

On a mac to use a .png file as icon do this:

  3. Press command-C to copy the selection
  4. Control-Click on the file/folder you would like to change- click get info

Uh oh, cheap iPhone just in time for Fathers Day

WWDC was today, mostly boring stuff. People can develop apps and games for iPhones, GPS, exchange server support, and a possible coolest thing: mobileme.com. Goodbye .mac hello mobileme.com basically an exchange server for normal people. No it is not free. And it’s available in July. If they have a free version/account I’m all over that. Otherwise sorry, I’ll set up my own exchange server. But with an 8gb iphone costing as much as most other decent phones, it’s pretty tempting to look at AT&T prices again. Anyone gotten an iPhone to work on Cricket yet?

“Now on to the final challenge — affordability. Started at $599 for an 8GB iPhone, now $399. The iPhone 3G 8GB will sell for… $199. $299 for the 16GB — a white version of this size will be available too. The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries. The maximum price around the world is $199 USD.
