Just Beautiful

My parents’ land is gorgeous. I feel like I can brag about it because I have nothing to do with it! They’ve done a great job with landscaping & maintaining their place. It’s particularly beautiful at dusk when the setting sun highlights everything. Seeing the beautiful light cast across the land and breathing in the fresh, fragrant air makes me feel sentimental.

Play (Kick)ball!

The evening before we left for California, Chase had his last kickball game. We were glad he’d had a good time & that he’d had a friendly, patient coach.

IMG_1966

IMG_1963

In order to keep things simple for all the 5-year-olds, they weren’t allowed to run more than one base at a time or get anyone out. Pace didn’t know that at the first game, so he enthusiastically yelled to Chase to keep running around the bases after kicking the ball. Pace was quickly put in his place by the coach. Smile

IMG_1968

Chase was glad that his buddy Jaxon was on his team! (& one kid was missing from the team picture.)

Chase enjoyed the kickball season, but not nearly as much as he enjoyed the soccer season last year. He’ll start soccer in about 6 weeks (along with KINDERGARTEN), and he can hardly wait!

Marin County Fair

My kids & I just returned from a 2-week Northern California trip. We enjoyed the change of scenery, all the beloved family & friends, & being spoiled (even though we really missed Daddy).

The first big outing was going to the Marin County Fair. What a blast! Grandma was proud of Chase’s interest in the Compost Workshop for kids.

           IMG_1974

Chase is like his Grandma in that he’s intrigued by such topics as compost, recycling, & identification of plants & birds. From time to time, he’ll ask me what the name of a particular tree is, and I respond, “Um, ask Grandma…”

IMG_1975

Chase also enjoyed the petting zoo. He’s always drawn to the goats! I didn’t enjoy the goats as much as he did, because one of them kept sneaking up to get a taste of my “grass green” skirt & I ended up with goat snot & saliva all over me.

IMG_1982

Meanwhile, Charlotte kept her distance from the creatures & simply smiled her cheesy “camera smile” for me.

IMG_1979

Sporting their cool shades while waiting for the pig races to start. Rachel & Mom were gracious enough to ride some of the carnival rides with Chase & Charlotte, as I wasn’t allowed to with my pregnant belly!

       IMG_1986

What a beautiful backdrop for the fair! And perfect weather, too. Too bad a mother nearby allowed her little boy to pee right smack in the middle of the grass, where people were sitting on their picnic blankets… People never cease to amaze me.

IMG_2002

Sorry about the blinking picture, Mom! Below is a cuter one. And this one’s funny because Charlotte is too busy with her cotton candy to smile for the camera. We were in the kids’ area where there were free crafts to do (after we saw the AMAZING Chinese Acrobats perform in the auditorium).

   IMG_2001

And I LOVE these “trash cans”!!!! Notice how the black “Landfill” one & makes you feel guilty & evil for tossing anything in there.

IMG_2005

Only in California (or the Pacific Northwest area) would one find compost bins right along with the trash bins.

I always enjoy the earth-conscious, laid-back nature of Northern California. I didn’t see one person ratting their big blonde hair in the bathrooms… but something I did see in the bathrooms were garbage cans labeled “Compost Only.” (Utah, you really need to get on the “earth-conscious” bandwagon!)

Surprise!

While Joy has been out of town, I’ve been very busy. Both at work and at home. You see it all started when we started discussing where to fit three kids with two rooms. A few months ago we had Charlotte start sleeping in Chase’s room to see how it went and if that would work when #3 comes. Well, it had pros and cons. They did talk a lot more at bedtime but they did grow closer and help each other. There was also the problem that Chase still considered it his room, as he should since none of her stuff was in there, and he liked his privacy when getting dressed etc. So the craziest thing happened. Saturday before the family left I had this idea pop into my head. I immediately texted my buddy who builds stuff and asked for an estimate.

I had the idea to separate the girls and the boys! I figured Charlotte likes to stay awake and talk anyways so she probably won’t mind that cute little baby sister crying all night. And Chase is too old to be showing his privates to his sister, he might start to like it… so they need to be in separate rooms. There isn’t room for bulky bunk beds and a crib or vice versa. *BING* (not the search engine) IDEA! I’ll mount a bed up on the wall so there is more room underneath! Yeah that’s a great idea!

Joy is getting home now and she has NO idea I’ve done this. Am I crazy or crazy smart?

Here is the final product! Chase’s Superhero Makeover

And now, Charlotte needs something really nice and girly.

More high res photos & video coming after the reveal. Stay tuned for Joy’s reaction, make a comment to vote if she’ll love it or hate it!

Family

Been pretty quite around these parts, including the blog. That’s probably b/c Joy and the kids have been out of town for a couple weeks. They took the camera, otherwise I’d post pics of all the fun I’ve been having. Can’t wait till these guys get back tomorrow!

Barefoot Walking

My flip flops have been starting the process of breaking down, and it’s that time of the year when I go looking for the best flip flops I can find. I always have a hard time finding ones that are a good balance between well made, comfortable, and priced right. During my quest I was talking with my carpool buddy who is a runner. He mentioned his freaky weird running shoes called Vibram Five Fingers.

Wow, those are odd I said to him. Then I started drinking the kool aid as I read how modern shoes relax the foot as it walks and so we smash the heel into the ground and that shock travels up the leg. While if you have no shoes on you tend to land on the ball of your foot and the shock is absorbed more with the bending of your ankle and your calf muscles. I’ve linked a study from Harvard below, this page really swayed me. Now I walk barefoot a lot already b/c flip flops come off so easily and I thought, yes that is true. I agree and it makes sense. I’m going to order some and walk around all day in them. And that’s what I did. While it might take Joy a bit to get used to my new shoes, I think I like them so far. Don’t worry honey, they make a kid sized version too!

5 Reasons to Walk Barefoot:

  1. Strengthens Muscles in the Feet and Lower Legs—Going barefoot will stimulate and strengthen muscles in the feet and lower legs, improving general foot health and reducing the risk of injury.
  2. Improves Range of Motion in Ankles, Feet and Toes—No longer ‘cast’ in a shoe, the foot and toes move more naturally.
  3. Stimulates Neural Function Important to Balance and Agility—When going barefoot, thousands of neurological receptors in the feet send valuable information to the brain, improving balance and agility.
  4. Eliminate Heel Lift to Align the Spine and Improve Posture—By lowering the heel, your bodyweight becomes evenly distributed across the footbed, promoting proper posture and spinal alignment.
  5. Allow the Foot and Body to Move Naturally—Which just FEELS GOOD.

Great new labels

The FDA put out some new labels that probably will never hit the actual market thanks to our awesome legal system, Nathan I’m blaming you and your kind. I really like them actually and I think it would be great if we could build this in to most of our products.

Here are some I came up with real quick:

Firefox 5

Hello! Firefox 5 came out today. Where did that come from!? I know huh? Not much here to talk about except for 1000 fixes. The one feature that rocks… APP TABS!!!

“App Tabs: Take sites you always keep open—like Web mail—off your tab bar and give them a permanent home in your browser.”

Love, love, love these little guys. I’m the type of person who keeps tabs open all day. I’ve had 5 tabs open for about 2 weeks. They are articles I’m waiting to read. Now I’m trying to keep my App Tab making craziness to a minimum. Check it out in your Firefox, just right click on a tab, then click make app tab. Way to go Firefox!

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Fathers Day Dad! Ever since my parents migrated from NC to UT we’ve been able to spend more time together. It’s been very enjoyable. Some of the fun is talking about family events that we all remember or don’t remember. Dad always tells me I’m remembering it wrong. Just to prove him wrong, here are some things I remember from growing up.

I remember having the coolest toys. I could play for hours by myself imagining all the different planets and battles that my toys would have. Thanks for providing such great tools of fun Dad.

I remember going fishing with my dad. I remember one time specifically, the city of Charlotte had just opened a new belt system around the city. My dad and I got up early and decided to take that new road that not many people knew about. It was a foggy morning and as we drove on this deserted 4 lane highway with about 50 feet of visibility it seemed like the rest of the world was gone and it was just the two of us off to hang out on a boat for a while.

I remember food being on the table. This might not seem like much to list, but my Dad got the job done. He worked hard to make sure we always ate. I only have one boy, Dad had four to feed. I know we ate a ton of food, so that must have cost a lot. Thanks for always bringing home the bacon, and eggs, and milk, cheese, cereal, doughnuts, juice, pizza, etc.

I remember having parties. Not only could I throw a party at our house any weekend I wanted, but I remember my friends asking if they could come hang out with my parents. Everyone loved my Dad. He may act Eeyore-ish sometimes, but he can really turn on the Southern charm.

I remember one time most of our scout troop got in trouble for something and we had to leave scout camp early. The scoutmaster called my dad to see if he could come get us. He said he would and we were all worried about how angry he would be after driving a few hours to come pick up his rowdy boys. After hearing why we got kicked out of scout camp he just laughed and took us all to Pizza Hut. I later had a friend tell me he was glad his Dad wasn’t available to pick us up b/c he would have yelled at all of us during the ride back. Thanks for being a real person Dad and understanding.

I remember standing in my goalie equipment on the ice thinking it was the most boring game I had ever played in. Then I looked up to see my Dad taking pictures and cheering like it was the most important game he had ever been to. Thanks Dad for being a fan.

I remember my Dad taking us to eat before going to Priesthood Session, giving us blessings, and giving talks. I remember Dad teaching Young Single Adults and priest quorum. I remember him teaching me to catch and throw a baseball and the best way to open a talk in sacrament meeting. He taught me how to take things apart and how to fix things.

Dad this fathers day, I hope you remember that while we’re hard to live with, your four boys love you very much. Thanks for being there for us and doing your best!

The Beloved Library/Fountain

Our current library is very old and it’s basically falling apart. But I love it that the library has a summer reading program & all sorts of activities and events for kids. I mean, who doesn’t love a place that provides the supplies to make Hippo Hats?!

IMG_1894

Chase & Charlotte like the programs at the library. But they LOVE it that the library has a playground outside of it, and a fountain.

IMG_1935

The last time we visited the library, I wouldn’t let them get in the water, because I didn’t know whether or not that was prohibited!

IMG_1934

But this time, some other kids were splashing around in there and weren’t getting yelled at by any irate librarians, so I permitted my own kids to go for it.

IMG_1938

IMG_1936

IMG_1933

Chase & Charlotte were having a blast and they were actually NOT ARGUING OR SCREAMING at each other, so we were all happy.

IMG_1932

P.S. We’ve been having the most pleasant, mild summer weather! Most days in the 70s. Perfect for a pregnant lady!
